Running a greenhouse in 2026 means growing plants and managing information at the same time. Crop timing, inventory, environmental controls, irrigation, labor, pest scouting, orders, shipping, weather, customer communication, and accounting all create data. The challenge is not finding more technology. The challenge is choosing technology that removes work instead of creating another screen somebody has to babysit.
The best greenhouse tech usually does one of four things: measures something we were guessing at, automates a repetitive task, catches a problem earlier, or moves information between people without retyping it. If a new tool cannot do one of those jobs reliably, it may be a gadget rather than an investment.
1. Inventory and Production Management Software
Inventory software should do more than tell you how many plants were entered into a database last month. A useful greenhouse system connects what you plan to grow with what is actually on the floor, what has been sold, what is allocated to orders, and what still needs to be transplanted or finished.

- Reporting by crop, week, customer, or location
Systems such as GrowRight and other nursery-specific platforms make the most sense when they reflect how a grower actually schedules, pulls, ships, and replenishes plants. The software should adapt to the operation—not force the greenhouse to reorganize itself around a generic retail inventory model.
2. Environmental Control Systems
Commercial environmental controls remain one of the highest-value forms of greenhouse technology because they directly affect the crop. Current systems from companies such as Argus, Wadsworth Controls, and Link4 can coordinate heating, cooling, vents, curtains, fans, humidity, irrigation, and lighting at different levels of complexity.
The important question is not which controller has the longest feature list. Ask whether it can handle your number of zones, whether sensors are easy to calibrate and replace, whether alarms reach the right people, whether remote access is reliable, and whether the platform can expand when another greenhouse is added.
3. Sensors and Data Logging
Temperature and relative humidity are only the beginning. Depending on the crop and system, growers can monitor substrate moisture, electrical conductivity, pH, PAR light, daily light integral, leaf temperature, water flow, tank levels, weather, and equipment status.
A sensor is useful only if the number changes a decision. Collecting millions of readings because the dashboard looks impressive is not precision horticulture. Decide what action a high, low, or changing reading should trigger before installing the sensor.
4. Irrigation and Fertigation Automation
Watering is still one of the places where technology can save labor and improve crop uniformity. Boom irrigation, drip systems, ebb-and-flow benches, valve-zone control, substrate sensors, and automated fertigation all have a place depending on the crop.
Do not automate a bad irrigation system. First check pressure, distribution uniformity, nozzle condition, drainage, injector calibration, and whether the crop is grouped logically. Then automation can repeat a good process instead of repeating a mistake faster.
Cornell’s 2026 greenhouse IPM training emphasized the same progression from visual and weight-based watering to sensor-based irrigation tied to root health, crop timing, and disease prevention. Technology works best when it supports good horticultural judgment rather than replacing it.
5. Digital Pest Scouting and IPM Records
A phone or tablet can make pest scouting much more useful when observations are tied to a crop, house, bench, date, and treatment history. Photos, sticky-card counts, hotspot maps, and treatment records can reveal patterns that are easy to miss when scouting lives on loose paper.
Image-recognition apps can be helpful for generating possibilities, but do not let a consumer app make a pesticide decision. Confirm pests and diseases with trained staff, diagnostic resources, Extension, or a lab when the diagnosis matters. A confident wrong answer from software is still wrong.
6. Barcode, RFID, and QR Label Systems
Barcodes are not glamorous, which is exactly why they are useful. A printed code can connect a physical tray, pot, rack, or product to a database without somebody typing the name again.

QR codes solve a different problem. They can send customers or employees to care instructions, production records, training material, or a product page. Use permanent URLs so thousands of printed labels do not become useless when the website changes.
7. POS and E-Commerce Integration
Retail growers need sales data to come back into inventory instead of living in a separate cash-register universe. Square, Shopify, Clover, WooCommerce, and specialized garden-center systems can all work, but integration matters more than the logo.
Check how the system handles variants, units, taxes, wholesale versus retail pricing, customer accounts, returns, discounts, and offline sales. The cheapest checkout system can become expensive if someone spends hours reconciling inventory afterward.
8. Supplemental Lighting and DLI Control
LED fixtures have become only one piece of the lighting decision. The more useful question is whether the crop is receiving the target daily light integral at the right stage and whether supplemental light is being used when natural light is insufficient.
PAR sensors, DLI calculations, dimming, schedules, shade curtains, and environmental controls can work together. Before buying fixtures, calculate the crop requirement, fixture layout, electrical load, utility rate, photoperiod, and expected return. A bright greenhouse is not automatically a profitable greenhouse.
9. On-Site Weather Monitoring
A weather station at the operation can be more useful than an app reporting conditions ten miles away. Outdoor temperature, humidity, rainfall, wind, solar radiation, and leaf-wetness data can influence irrigation, venting, frost preparation, pesticide timing, shipping, and labor planning.
The station does not need to be exotic. It needs to be properly installed, maintained, and located where the readings mean something. A precision sensor mounted over an asphalt roof is precision measurement of the wrong environment.
10. Drones and Aerial Imaging—When the Acreage Justifies It
Drones make more sense for field-grown nursery stock, large outdoor production blocks, storm assessment, mapping, drainage problems, and broad crop scouting than they do for a few greenhouse bays.

Before buying any drone system, include pilot requirements, airspace rules, software, batteries, data processing, and the actual number of acres it can save you from walking.
11. Team Communication and Work Orders
Greenhouse work happens across houses, fields, loading docks, trucks, propagation areas, and offices. Group texting works until an important instruction disappears between lunch photos and somebody asking who moved the forklift.
Slack, Microsoft Teams, Asana, Trello, Square Team Communication, and other platforms can separate announcements, tasks, photos, schedules, and files. Keep the system simple enough that employees actually use it, and define where urgent issues belong so a crop emergency is not buried in a general chat channel.
12. Websites, Customer Portals, and Online Ordering
A grower website should reduce phone calls and friction, not just display a logo. Availability, ordering rules, delivery information, account access, care information, and contact details should be easy to find on a phone.

13. AI Tools: Useful Assistant, Terrible Unsupervised Grower
Generative AI can help draft product descriptions, summarize notes, build spreadsheet formulas, organize procedures, write training material, translate routine communication, analyze exported data, and create first drafts of marketing content.
It should not be allowed to invent chemical rates, diagnose a disease from a poor photo, rewrite a safety procedure without review, or make production decisions without a knowledgeable person checking the result. 14. Backups, Permissions, and Cybersecurity
The more the greenhouse depends on software, the more important boring IT becomes. Back up critical databases. Give employees only the access they need. Remove accounts when people leave. Use multifactor authentication where possible. Keep computers and plugins updated. Document who owns each account and domain.

Buy the Problem Solver, Not the Dashboard
Before buying a greenhouse technology product, write down the problem in one sentence. Then estimate what that problem costs in labor, shrink, waste, missed sales, quality, energy, or management time.
If the new system saves enough of that cost to justify purchase, training, subscriptions, maintenance, and integration, it may be a good investment. If nobody can explain what improves after installation, the greenhouse may be buying a dashboard instead of a solution.
Technology should give growers more control over the crop and more time to manage the business. When it does that, it belongs in the greenhouse. When it creates three logins, two subscriptions, and a new weekly spreadsheet without eliminating anything, keep shopping.
