If you try to stream audio encoded at 128 kbps over a connection capped at 128 kbps, there is almost no room left for network overhead.

  • Lower-bitrate audio can often work
  • A true 128 kbps audio stream may pause or buffer because the connection has almost no headroom

Codec efficiency matters too. Some formats sound better at the same bitrate.

So yes: music can work at 128 kbps, but lower audio quality is safer. A full 128 kbps stream is right on the edge.

How slow is it compared to “modern” internet?

This part is wild.

The FCC raised its fixed-broadband benchmark to 100 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload in 2024 and retained that benchmark in its 2026 broadband report.
